This Other Eden by Paul Harding
4.0
I read this book in honor of Black History Month, and I’m glad I did.
I’m not really sure if I liked this book or not; lots of mixed feelings abound. I found the content interesting and well-written, but I disliked the structure and lack of quotation marks when characters spoke. I liked many of the characters and the depth I got from them, but I disliked the “side story” paragraphs and felt they were often bit helpful in furthering the plot.
I also really struggled with the racism in this novel. I know, of course, that that was the point, but it didn’t make it any easier in some sections. I will say, though, that Harding did an excellent job researching and keeping the story fairly true to history.
The book is quite poetic and symbolic, and I appreciated the Biblical parallels in a way I wasn’t expecting.
All in all, I’m not really sure if I liked this book, as it’s not my usual style. However, I genuinely appreciated it and would probably recommend it. I certainly learned a lot, and I very much value that Harding brought this important and heartbreaking historic story to life.
