I went into this book kind of blindly and I was very pleasantly surprised! I don’t know why based on the cover and title I thought it was going to be some kind of fantasy but it ended up being a deliciously dark revenge/billionaire romance.

My plot in this book had me hooked and my favorite thing about reading it was uncovering Holden’s past and the truth behind his motives. I absolutely loved Holden; there was so much depth to his character. I felt myself soften for him more and more as the story went along and by the end I wanted to protect him at all costs.

I also enjoyed Rowan’s character and how she stood strong despite society’s expectations of her. And I liked that there was a lot more under the surface for her too. I did feel though that there were a lot of contradictions to her character that were hard to get past. Like the fact that she’s supposed to be a better person than her family but continues to defend them despite their terrible actions. And her actions at the end seem to go completely against the “freedom” she’s been fighting to achieve for herself, all out of spite. I was very frustrated with her impulsive actions at the end, though I can understand how she felt driven to them, she could have taken a minute to think up something that wasn’t the worst possible choice!

That said, I still really enjoyed the story and the romance between Holden and Rowan. The way the connection between them grew and the intimacy developed was done so well and very believable. And I’m definitely on the hook to read the next book as soon as it releases, especially after that brutal cliffhanger ending!
