American Gods by Neil Gaiman

2.5

This is very much a boys book. The women in here are basically just for sex, which is disgusting and makes me dislike the book. It’s also pretty confusing and slow in the beginning which is not a great combo to have. Also I know historically gods and powerful men like to have sex with underage girls but if you’re writing a fantasy novel, you can absolutely choose not to do that. Statutory rape isn’t cute and doesn’t need to happen in fantasy novels, especially with characters the audience is supposed to like.

The whole modern vs olden gods thing is cool and it was interesting to read about all the characters but this book just doesn’t have enough umph to it. For what it’s about and what happens, you’d expect the reader to care more but I just didn’t give a shit about the main character. I didn’t care about any of them. I didn’t like any of them and tbh I don’t know if we are supposed to.

The cons were cool and I liked the bonus stuff at the end where Gaiman says that people have tried his cons successfully so he’s learned to fuzz the details a bit more so people can’t use his literature as inspiration any more.

Other than that tho, this book is not his best work at all. If you’re a man, you’ll probably like this, but ladies: I’d stay away. It’s not worth it. It’s too long to suck this much.
