Lily and the Octopus
by Steven Rowley
4 1/2 stars. This story of a man and his terminally ill dog was one of the most memorable books I have read in a while. Equal parts fanciful and emotionally honest, it was a sort of an amalgamation of Alf (if Alf had been a dog), Old Yeller, Moby Dick, David Sedaris, with Snoopy mixed in. I felt that the parts of the story where Ted confronted the octopus, and what the octopus represented, were surprisingly deep. Anyone who owns a dog that they love like a member of the family would appreciate the emotional bond that is examined in this book.
