Who is the real monster?
For anyone who needs a cathartic story where the good guys win and the bad guys gets what’s owed, this book is for you.
This book pretty much has everything you’d want in a good read. The writing is beautiful; the vampire lore pulls you in; there’s never a dull moment in the story; and the characters feel so real it’s heartbreaking.
As much as I liked this book, and as satisfying as the ending was, the story does come with its own monkey’s paw. The book is classified as horror, but not necessarily because of the vampires. The body horror in this book is raw, intense, and incredibly hard to get through. There’s a series of trigger warning in the beginning of the book that you need to take seriously and assume that the content is severe for each warning.
Let’s not try and delude ourselves. This is a historical fiction about slavery, and the author doesn’t try to hide the brutality of it. Even in the few pages where the characters are free from physical brutality, they are humiliated and emotionally brutalized in ways that don’t let the reader forget the evil inherent in this still-present system. I would say that for the first 150 to 200 pages we are stuck with these powerless characters living their daily cruelties. But if you’re able to get through it, I really believe it’s worth it.
