Butcher & Blackbird

FIVE OUT OF FIVE FUCKING STARS MAN. FIIIIIVEEEEEEE! I LOVE THIS. I LOVE IT SO MUCH. I ENJOYED IT FROM PAGE ONE ALL THE WAY TO THE END, AND I DIDNT WANT IT END AT ALL. Literally from the first page, I cld tell in my heart that it was going to be a 5 stars book. From the moment Sloane described the maggots that emerged from the dead man’s body, as little “orzo pastas” crawling towards her. SOLD. IMMEDIATELY SOLD. I just knew that it was 5 stars and I’m so soooooo glad I wasn’t disappointed. Here’s what I love:
1. The plot - come on! Serial killers falling in love? HOW OFTEN DO U GET THIS
Sloane and Rowan hunt down other serial killers as a pastime cuz they’re both rly fked in the head. So it’s kinda like some vigilante shit, where they only go aft the bad guys, like antiheroes. And that’s also how they met, when they both tracked down the same killer and wound up on the same crime scene! The plot was CRAZY, it doesn’t take itself too seriously and it doesn’t try too hard to be something it’s not. It’s one of those books where it’s btr to turn off ur brain and not qn too many things (like why on earth is the police so incompetent and how have they not been caught yet). It’s gory, it’s violent and it’s gruesome. But at the same time, it’s so wholesome and heartfelt. We see why Sloane and Rowan harbor this darkness in their hearts, that drive them towards committing such acts. We see them find solace in each other, two kindred spirits who completely see and understand each other.
The plot is dark enough without being unbearable (looking at that one popular booktok rec…). We did (kind of) get the third act breakup scene too, but that was resolved wonderfully, and I actl loved it (SO RARE!). Its original and refreshing and I just LOVE IT SO MUCH
2. The characters AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don’t think I’ve saved this many scenes from a book before, but I couldn’t stop man. It was literally too good. The way both of them cld process their feelings so maturely and logically. IMMACULATE. And the concerns / insecurities they had were SO REAL and relatable. The way Rowan was quietly pining aft Sloane for YEARS, and never once pressured her to reciprocate, cuz he knew she needed more time. Pls there were so many sweet scenes that had me absolutely swooning.
When Sloane showed up in Rowan’s restaurant, unannounced and unsure of what she was doing there, only to leave abruptly cuz she felt overwhelmed. PLEASE WHEN HIS BROTHER, LACHLAN, ALERTED HIM TO HER PRESENCE, AND TRIED TO BLOCK HER FROM LEAVING
