This is the first book in the Lunaria Realms series, a why choose fantasy romance series with fae, vampires, and shifters. Tropes include a building why choose, found family, banter, political intrigue, queer representation and a sassy FMC.
The Lovely: I loved the world-building and how it reimagined the genesis of different types of beings and their use of magic. This fed in nicely to the plot and how the story developed. I felt like the pacing was solid and kept moving, never leaving the reader to get bored. I enjoyed trying to unravel the mystery along with the characters.
Also Lovely: I also liked the FMC, Samara, and how she wanted to do and be more after a lackluster marriage. I was glad to see she took charge of her life and what she wanted rather than standing idly by.
The Mundane: My only meh was this was marketed as a why choose story but never really got to that point in this first book. I suspect the series as a whole will be why choose but I would have liked to have really seen that in the first book.
Rating: 4/5 Stars 2/5 Flames
Recommendation: That ending went boom! It made me wonder about other things we think we knew as the reader and opens up a number of new questions. I can’t wait to read book two when it comes out this fall. If you like a growing why choose fantasy romance and different types of magical beings, I think you would like this book.
