The Art of Fielding
by Chad Harbach
People will tell you this is a baseball book. Don't listen to them. Some of the best scenes may take place on a baseball diamond, but The Art of Fielding is an exploration of male friendship. Henry Skrimshander, top-ranked college shortstop, makes the first errant throw of his entire life, severely wounding his good friend and teammate, and throwing (hah) his own life, the lives of the team captain/mentor and even the college president into a tailspin. The characters are true-to-life and well-drawn. The effortless prose never interferes with the story. And the author resists the temptation to settle for the made-for-tv-movie redemptive moment. To borrow a phrase from Henry's wounded teammate: Mr. Harbach, you are skilled. I exhort you.
