Picture books aren't on my regular reading list, but I am planning to attend the Newbery/Caldecott Banquet at the American Library Association conference this month, and wanted to read the winning Caldecott book before hearing the Javaka Steptoe, the author/illustrator speak. This book reminded me how I have often wished I could have been an elementary school librarian and get to spend more time with young children and picture books. This one is truly one to share with all young children (and, really, everyone). The art and story perfectly complement each other and are both beautiful and moving. The book is a biography of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, and also offers lots of opportunity for discussions, including the importance of pursuing your passions, the support of family, and mental illness.
