King's Folly by Sabrina Flynn

4.0

Another great entry in The Legends of Fyrsta series and I really think more people should be reading this!

The beginning of this book was a little slow and I was starting to think that maybe I was only going to enjoy the first book. Boy was I wrong! And I'm happy I was too. While the book just took a little longer to get into it once it did it didn't let go.

I really love the world that Flynn has created here. With Runes and Blood magic and criminal cities and regions in the world that feel unique to themselves. Races of beings and characters that live thousands of years. It all feels alive and like I'm walking around with them without being overly verbose about it.

With that being said though the main highlight of this series for me has to be the characters. Marsais, Oenghus, and Isiilde are wonderfully written characters that have banter better than an episode of Gilmore Girls. The back and forth is great and each has their own personality. I feel like I know each one of them. Even characters that don't have as big of a spotlight are fun and interesting to read about. The motivations and decisions made by the characters feel real, even if they feel wrong sometimes. And in this book we get an expansion of characters as well, that grow and learn for better or for worse in this book 2. I love it. The more I read the more I realize I really enjoy great characters probably most of all.

The writing in this book is awesome. It flows from word to word simply enough and it's easy to track and follow. No super lyrical writing or prose that is exquisitely lovely but hard to follow, and while there is a place for that, I appreciated the easy to read format here.

As I said up above, the story started off pretty slow. I mean, it picked up right were book 1 left off, but it wasn't as exciting as how it had left us. But it didn't take to long for it to get to it and start laying down some more good stuff. And the ending was awesome. It made me want more, even more than the ending of the first book! At times heartbreaking but full of realness.

I can't wait to see how this series ends and I'm so glad I picked it up. If you need a new series to start, this one should be on your list.
