My Heart Is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones

4.0

I don't read much horror but when Milana/ @acouplereads picked this one for her October #readwithacouplereads bookclub I was intrigued!

In the Lakeside town of Proofrock, Idaho teenage Jade lives a hard life and channels her trauma into an obsession with slasher films. She then begins to feel like she is living in one when tourists go missing and things become strained with the rich people who bought the land across the lake and are breaking ground on a community of rustic mansions. As summer progresses will a killer rise?

This was a slow burn for me. I almost dnf'd it but after a few friends said it was worth it to finish I stuck with it and I'm glad I did! I was pulled into Jade's chaotic world as she so desperately sought connection. Stephen Graham Jones attention to detail in relevance to the story, slasher films, the town, Jade's character, and colonization was so so well done! I have a copy of The Only Good Indians that I am very much looking forward to! If like me you dont do a lot of horror books give this a try!

*I'm not an own voices reviewer for this book so definitely look into thoes for more thoughtful reviews*

Thank You @simonschusterca for sending me an early copy.♡
