My only criticism is that sometimes the writing doesn’t read well. By that, I mean a handful of times I had to reread a paragraph to make sense of the way it was constructed.
Other than this, this was a fantastic book. It was lighthearted and conversational, filled with funny anecdotes of life as a junior doctor. Moreover, this book really serves as a spotlight to show the real difficulties and shortcomings of the NHS. You get a really good picture of a junior doctor’s day to day - not only on the job, but also how this inadvertently affects their personal lives.
I am guilty of seeing doctors as otherworldly, mythical, non-feeling fountains of knowledge. It’s easy to do this when you want to need believe that someone, somewhere, has the 100% correct answers to your problem. In reality, though, there’s a lot of (methodical and fact based) estimations in diagnosis, at the beginning at least, until the machines get involved.
I think this book is really successful in that it has set out to do exactly what it planned, and I not only had a laugh or two at the author’s expense, but also learnt a lot.
Strong 4.75 stars. 5 if I’m feeling fancy.
