Beautiful, haunting, descriptive prose. It is written in many very short chapters, primarily from the point of view of the two main characters, but also from several side characters at times. It also follows 2 seperate timelines, one in 1944, and the other leading up to that point in time and then on from there. I can see where this structure could be very confusing and/or off-putting for some people, but for me, it helped me stay invested in an otherwise slow paced first half.
This book is set in WW2, but it’s all about the characters. I desperately wanted it to end differently, but life doesn’t always get tied up in nice pretty bows. I’m also not usually one for epilogues, but I think it’s important to see that lives continue intersect in different places over time.
