I have no idea where I got the recommendation for this book from but it turned up in my library holds and I started reading without any clue as to what I was going to find. And I'm glad I did!
I don't want to spoil the book as going in without knowing anything worked well for me. You get thrown in at the beginning as you witness Ben being attacked in his apartment (in Paris obviously) and then the story proper starts a little later as his sister Jess arrives to visit and finds him missing. I'm going no further than that.
I got caught up in the story and wasn't really fishing for advance notice of the twists and turns in the plot, but I didn't feel they were either super obvious or super hidden. One of the reasons I enjoyed the book was that the writing felt Goldilocks like to me. Just enough was revealed so that the story seemed credible but not so much that I was watching out for the next twist. And if I had seen things coming I don't think the book would have been spoilt. It wasn't a thriller with a jump scare round every corner (or page turn). I'll have to read more of the author's books and I wonder what I'll make of them now I know a bit more about what to expect.
It was an unexpectedly good read with a cast of very well written characters, I could believe in them and in their reasons for doing things in their own ways.
