Superman Smashes the Klan
by Gene Luen Yang
An outstanding graphic novel that entertains and teaches about racism. It tells the story of a Chinese American family moving to a white neighborhood and their harassment by the Klan. It also tells some of Superman’s backstory. Based on a 1940’s radio series.
I read this for my book club, but am also using it for our homeschool book club so my kids can read it too. Excellent for older elementary and teenagers. It’s one of those rare books that can be enjoyed by all ages. The author’s note is especially well-done and informative. I can’t recommend this book enough.
