Shadow of War: An Epic Fantasy Adventure by J.D. Ruffin

4.0

These books are definitely getting better and I'm enjoying them a lot.

From the first scene, I was excited to see where the story would go.
The book surprised me by how far it went every now and then, which is pretty impressive considering how the second book ended.
This book was mostly just plain fun, but also had really emotional parts that hurt a bit to read. I kept being surprised that the author would, in fact, go "there" and in general, although parts were predictable, most of the time I didn't know what would happen and the way it happened was often a shocker.
There were many touching moments, my favourite being during the evacuation when the little girl touched the city one last time.

The evil people's characters are a bit confusing, however. Thorn had his moments in book 1 where he suddenly seemed chill and nice, and in this one he is very much against killing civilians, but then at other times he's fine killing innocents. Same with Isabel. She hasn't even thought her plan through, which is stupid. And up till a certain point she was constantly killing people cause she liked it, but then suddenly she decides she doesn't want to kill civilians. Irina gets a sad backstory, and it's definitely logical that she'd want revenge, but what I don't see is how that could grow into her wanting to kill everyone. If she was so kind at first, why does she not just want revenge on the ones who hurt her? But yeah, maybe they're actually villains with many layers and I'm not used to that. Idk.

I was surprised by the big good guy (arch Mage) turning out to be a sadistical murderer

There were still some things that didn't make sense, but they were minor things (such as Jess being upset that her father didn't tell her about plans he made while she was kidnapped).
