War - What If It Were Here? by Janne Teller
3.0
This is obviously a very timely book and it's handled well, neatly reversing the polarity on all the factors currently in the news, trying to put the reader into the shoes of a refugee. It's well done and covers all the angles nicely.
So why only a measly 3 stars? Well there are two reasons. Firstly, at the risk of seeming like a miser, 5.99 is an awful lot of money for such a tiny, tiny book that I read in about ten minutes. Secondly, I think, although the writer tries to avoid a simplistic "Brexit = War" formula (she says as much in the afterword) the format of the book, looking like an EU passport, and the back story (EU collapses, UK goes fascist, attacks Denmark and somehow loses) was too specific and made me think more about the unlikely narrative than I did about refugees. It could maybe have been less specific so as not to distract from the central point.
