I Can't Make This Up: Life Lessons
by Kevin Hart, Neil Strauss
I fucking love Kevin Hart. His mere existence makes me bust out in laughter (and I mean that in the best way possible). Anything he is in makes me laugh, and even if he plays the same character over and over, it's a HILARIOUS character that seems so genuine, so it cracks me up!!
I requested this from the library because I wanted a book that would make me laugh. And in the same manner as the other reviews I wrote today, this book was much different than I thought it was going to be going into it. I was sure he would talk about his career and how he became a comedian, but I didn't realize the book was pretty much just that. The first part of the book does discuss his childhood and his parents and brother, and what school and growing up was like for him. And these parts were my favorite part of the book.
It's not that I didn't enjoy the parts about him becoming a comedian, but because I personally have no interest in becoming a comedian, an actor, or famous of any kind, they just didn't do as much for me. I thoroughly enjoy really anything Kevin has to say though, and this book was very funny. And even though I did kind of feel I read a little bit too long about his coming to of his career and how he got there, I am genuinely glad I do now know about his come up. I didn't realize he worked literally SO hard and didn't give up despite the amount of times he was denied shows, roles, etc. I think the book teaches a lot of good lessons about not giving up, and how every single one of those hardships he had contributed to his success today. He was even turned down for SNL when he originally auditioned, just to get on the show when he finally made up. But he said if he would have received the spot on SNL when he originally auditioned, he most likely wouldn't have made it as big as he is now. Because he wouldn't have gone on to do the other things he went on to do, and maybe that would have been the peak of his career?
I have a lot of respect for Kevin's mother, and she seems like an amazing woman that I would have loved to have met. I love seeing or hearing about mothers who take NO shit from their kids and love their child so much they'll do anything to provide the best life for them, even if their actions seem super extreme. Only a mother who loves as fiercely as she did will parent the way she did. His mom reminded me SLIGHTLY of my own mother (only slightly) because of how my dad was an alcoholic and my mom would do anything to prevent that from becoming us. Because of Kevin's father's problems with drugs, Kevin's mom would NOT let him go down that path.
Good book; just a bit long. Love me some Kevin Hart though for real <3
