There was an air of finality to this one. I got a sense that Chandler was squeezing the last juice out of of a well-squeezed lemon. Perhaps it was the deep southern California location just north of San Diego, lending itself to the feeling of a fish out of water. Marlowe still had his wits about him and the snarky repartee was there, but it felt like he did it because that was what everyone expected him to do, not because he 'enjoyed' it.

Still good and I enjoyed it for the short, quick, read that it was. It just didn't have the same meat on the bones as the others. A mediocre Chandler novel is still better than a lot of what's out there these days.
