baberuga 's review for:
In the Afterlight
by Alexandra Bracken
I reread the first two books prior to starting this last one just because I don't have a good memory when it comes to story retention.
I have to say like every other series out there, the last book was not my favourite. Ruby and Liam annoyed the heck out of me, Chubs, Vida and Zu was just kind of in the background for the majority of the book. Often swooping for comic relief. Not to say that this book was terrible, I just felt like things could have proceeded better.
*Spoilers* I feel like I would not be the only one who agrees to this point, Cole's death was extremely unnecessary and I felt like it did nothing for the story other than to prove that Clancy was infinitely stronger than Ruby which had been proven multiple times throughout this series. As a matter of fact I like Clancy, sure he's annoying in the fist two books but I hate him as much as other readers did. His biting side comments got me chuckling and if his personality was translated in a contemporary setting, girls would be all over him. Does he not read like the Travis Maddox in the Darkest Minds universe? Borderline psychotic, controlling, the jealous type, and sarcastic. Also while we're at it, I got a gay vibe from him. The scenes with him and Nico? Intense, bish! And what about Sam and Lucas? Where they at? So many unanswered questions. *Spoilers*
Would I read other series made by Ms Bracken? 100% yes, but only after every book in that series has been released. I'm not a big fan of rereading books, even though the second time round will go faster, I just don't want to. I made the mistake of starting the Gentlemen Bastards too early on, and I have been slapping myself every time I thought about it.
At the end of the day, I'm just glad that I can say that I have completed an entire series without stopping midway which has been quite the problem for me as of late.
Final verdict: 86%; 4 stars. A jolly grand series overall, but would probably never pick it back up ever again.
