The Stand
by Stephen King
While the plot starts slow, King's rich character development almost makes up for the pace. However, as the novel progresses, those characters quickly become caricatures of their journies (or abandoned altogether) in favor of a somewhat convoluted and still slow-moving plot. Many ideas brought up by King in the novel are interesting and appear and reappear in unexpected contexts - but none of these ideas are fully explored, leaving the reader confused with what the point of this 1400-page journey actually was.
