Overall impression was enjoyable but underwhelming.
I really enjoy Catton's writing style, and absolutely loved The Rehearsal, but with The Luminaries I didn't find myself particularly invested in the characters or the plot, which don't seem like the point of the story anyway. Maybe if I knew more about star signs and astrology (the characters each represent a sign) I would have found this a more engaging/interesting read, as it is I found the ending a bit underwhelming, and frequently had to remind myself who certain characters were (as, especially initially) there were many named characters who all seemed remarkably similar.
