There Are Trans People Here by H. Melt

emotional hopeful reflective fast-paced

3.5

So, on the one hand, I truly appreciated the emphasis on trans joy throughout these poems, highlighting the beauty of being trans, the richness of trans history, and celebrating all things trans. As Melt points out in their afterword, a lot of trans literature can be bleak; understandably, considering the violence and injustices trans people face. And I appreciate that they assert, “Now, I need trans joy. I need to know trans joy exists in order to imagine myself living in the future.”

On the other hand, I didn’t feel particularly drawn to any of these poems. I think the focus on euphoria was wonderful, but I didn’t vibe much with the style of the poems themselves and found them a little repetitive.
