Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews

4.0

Kate Daniels, magic sword-welding mercenary, has her loner existence up-ended when her mentor is murdered. Enter a plethora of allies, pseudo-allies, and dangerous enemies -- all of a paranormal persuasion. Kate is a compelling heroine, a mash-up of courage, smarts, foolishness, and nobility. The book is face paced and the magic-laden landscape beautifully detailed without overburdening the reader with info dumps. My only real problem with the book is her relationship with the shift-alpha, Curran. I'm not a fan of the enemies to lovers trope and that is definitely the substance of the romance subplot.
