*Edit to add - This book threw me into the worst reading slump! It’s easily the most underrated read this year, deserves way more hype.

I was hooked from the first line (and I need you to be too).. “For many, my birth meant death. It meant drowning in the rain I called with my first breath.” Tell me you’re not immediately curious!

My poor highlighter barely survived with the amount of annotating I did.

This is exactly the kind of YA book I crave: fast-paced,  trials, and a little mystery. I loved the emotional depth of the characters and the way the author wrote their grief.

I got a little worried when a love triangle showed up (not usually my thing), but it worked really well.

Blaze was such a relatable character, you really feel her struggles. Her fear of emotions and need to be free. Her growth was perfectly paced. It was really satisfying to watch her gain confidence and come into her power. The side characters and relationships were equally interesting, with varying levels of complexity.

The trials and magic system were unique and interesting. Some parts were a bit predictable, but honestly, it didn’t take away from the story at all. If you haven’t read this yet, you’re missing out!
