One Piece, Vol. 24: People's Dreams
by Eiichiro Oda
adventurous
emotional
funny
fast-paced
➽ I'm entering another One Piece Saga! The Strawhats have left Vivi behind as Alabasta is slowly rebuilding and recovering from the civil war. Of course, things are never quiet for long, as there's a literal ship falling from the sky and rumors of a Sky Island. Luffy obviously senses a new adventure and wants to check it out, but most people consider an island in the sky a fairytale. Even Nami has never seen anything like it, though the Log Pose points upward, so there has to be something. The crew also meets a salvage crew led by a monkey named Masira. Their interactions were funny, as Nami had Luffy, Zoro and Sanji try to salvage the ship, but it's technically Masira's turf, so they have to hide what they're doing.
➽ In order to find out more about the sky island, Zoro, Luffy and Nami visit Mock Town, which is mostly visited by pirates. It's a rowdy, dangerous place as there are many different pirate crews that often get into fights with each other. One of the most powerful pirates is Bellamy, who immediately tries to pick a fight with Luffy, as he considers him a 'small fry' and mocks their attempt to find the Sky Island as a childish Fantasy. I liked seeing the contrast between Luffy's and Bellamy's opinions on dreams, as Luffy is defined by his dream to become the Pirate King and is surrounded by people who want to achieve their own dreams. Meanwhile, Bellamy considers dreams foolish and sees anyone who has them as weak. He prefers to just take as much treasure as he can but doesn't believe in attempting to go after the One Piece. What's even more interesting is a huge, mysterious guy who's also in town. Luffy gets into an argument with him about the bar's cherry pies but later they meet again. Luffy and Zoro didn't fight back against Bellamy. The guy actually congratulates them and proclaims that people's dreams never end!
