Grim by M.K. Eidem
4.0
when oh, when will i learn NOT to start new books before bed
It is 4 am. I am feeling all the emotions. Lets fucking do this thing.
When did I fall in love with alien smut? When did alien smut get so damn good??????
This is a romance book where both characters act as ADULTS navigate the political landscape of (at least for Lisa) an ALIEN PLANET and uncover CONSPIRACIES and secrets along the way. Color me fucking stunned.
Plot-wise we've got Lisa who is one of a number of women abducted from Earth to be matched with alien warriors from a faraway galaxy. Their planet suffered a great plague (or a genetic mutation of sorts I'm still not sure) that resulted in more males being born than females. Like...a lot more. The ratio is 200 to 1 and that's not very good for procreation. But there's a catch. Our big multicolored (not just blue this time!) dudes have made a small miscalculation because our girl Lisa actually has 2 daughters. She agrees to bond with a warrior named Grim for the safe return of her children to her and so the book begins.
So my terribly organised thoughts:
Listen, I'm not a huge fan of children in books but this just worked SO well. The plot surrounding the need for children worked greatly in favor of that. And even my cold dead heart can admit that those two were *gags* cute.
The plot of this was top notch too. I can't remember the last time a book flowed so smoothly. An ending was so satisfying. It was the thing of dreams of people. I could go on and on raving about the ending because for some reason it just worked SO well for me. I've never been one for such a weirdly packed and tone changing end but my god I WAS RIVETED. RIVETED I TELL YOU.
The characters themselves.
Lisa was born to be a queen. You can't change my mind.
What a fucking power couple these two were. Brangelina could never.
I really liked Lisa's characterization. My girl stood up for herself, was a great mom, loyal, demanding, understanding. Judge and fucking jury.
I want to be like her when I grow up.
Grim was precious. The interactions he had with the little girls low key made me tear up a couple of times. Daddy Issues? Me? Nonsense!
And the grovel he gives. THE MAN GROVELS FOR THE GODS.
So why not 5 stars, well there is a lot in this book you'd have to overlook in order to truly enjoy. Let's start with the most obvious one.
The editing was abysmal.
That's just a fact. M.K. hun either your editor did you dirty or you edited this after a couple of margaritas and really can I blame you?
Do I care that this book is filled to the brim with grammatical, spelling, and all the other typed of mistakes? Of course not. Have you read my reviews?
Was this smut?
I don't believe it was. There were, I believe, a grand total of like 2 sex scenes in this book both of which were terribly underwhelming. The rest were sort of fade to black ones.
The first one happened way too soon with no buildup and wasn't too well written. The second I've already forgotten.
That being said, while I value smut in the highest of importance I was willing to overlook this entirely as I cared quite a bit for the plot, characters, and the unfolding of events.
Bottom of the line. Really fucking enjoyed this.
It appears that I've found the cure to get me out of any reading slump. Who would've thought it would be alien smut?
The stats don't lie though.
