The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea
by Yukio Mishima
The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea almost tricks you into believing it's an easy read. It seems to be quite a simple, innocent love story between a sailor and a lonely widow where the only potential problem is her son. Everything sort of goes according to plan, but then, at some point, you develop this strange sense of dread that something is about to happen. The story becomes too melancholic and almost foreboding without there actually being any changes in the narrative style. And then it hits you like a ton of bricks.
It's a quick afternoon read, but it will stay with you for a while.
