Black Magick, Vol. 1: Awakening Part I by Greg Rucka

4.0

I hadn't heard anything about this series, but picked it up because I'm somewhat of a witch, and I sometimes really like Greg Rucka. What I really *don't* like is having to root for cops, which is difficult considering the neverending output across various media that places police as the default good guys. Taking a witch with some of the memories of all her ancestors for thousands of years, and making her a homicide detective somewhere in Washington state is an interesting move, but the execution itself far surpassed my expectations. The dialogue isn't too heavy-handed or cliche, and the art is superb, with a particularly interesting element: the whole comic is in sepia tones, but the only real color added is on any magickal element on the page. I had to immediately dive into Volume 2 as soon as I finished this one, and now I'm antsy to see where the story goes from there.
