While I consider this episode to be one of Trek's finest, I feel that this novel is convoluted and misunderstands what works about the episode. We do not need to know anything more of Benny than he is what Sisko could've been in an opressive society. Half the book does not need to be spent on his teenage years. Also, the directive choice of showing the DS9 characters cutting into the 1950s characters becomes tiring in the written format.
