青の祓魔師 10 [Ao no Exorcist 10] by Kazue Kato
4.0
Back from dealing with the Impure King, Rin is in school, barely seeing his twin. Non-exorcist students are beginning to see low level demons. Unbeknownst to Rin, this is starting to be a problem world wide. We’re introduced to a few new characters, like Lightning companion to Arthur Angel, the paladin who wants Rin dead. They’re up against a man made gate to Gehenna and hint at an organization we don’t yet know.
In the meantime, Mesphisto has Rin over to dinner, reveals he’s a demon (apparently Rin is slow to catch on to these things) and that he loves humans, especially our trashy aspects like instant raman. He also scolds Rin for being a bad demon, admonishes him for showing his heart (the koma sword) and his tail. This is not the first time anyone has told this to Rin and it still doesn’t seem to sink in so I’m waiting for it to cost him.
Rin and his friends are set on the ‘seven school mysteries’ trying to stop the hauntings/demonic activity/whatever it is. These are sort of funny but underline the building demonic activity. I will say I had a problem with the one in the ladies bathroom. It was far too much like an evil Moaning Myrtle, and was not helped by the fact it was drawn a lot like that bathroom in Hogwarts. Bad call on the mangaka’s part. I suppose it’s meant to be a homage and I should see it in that light.
Over all I’m still loving this manga. The art is lovely and Rin, for all his foolhardiness is a compelling character as is his brother and their friends. Also, the last quarter of the manga was all 10th volume celebration so there is a lot of guest art and silly little side stories.
