Surreal and imaginative, The Cabinet starts out as a strange, quirky, and funny compendium of people with odd ailments, abilities, afflictions, or habits. But allegorical meaning accrues over the course of the book, and by the end a dark metaphor emerges for the disaffection and isolation of modern life.
