4.5

This is the third time I have read this book and every single time I am impressed by my former self’s taste. This has to be my favorite YA novel of all time because I find the tone so endearing. Meg Cabot manages to write an outrageous plot into believability through her characters. She so perfectly describes the way Sam’s feelings seem to guide her to all the wrong places to say all the wrong things. I found myself internally screaming at her the same way I wanted to shake my former self to say “Snap out of it!”. Cabot’s understanding of the essential teenage psyche really made this book for me, then and now. It loses half a star only because I found myself skimming some of the descriptions.
