very intriguing and original first quarter but this quickly devolved into something messy and inconsistent that was a total slog to get through. tbqh, i'm not sure i've ever seen such a cool concept and good energy get fumbled as bad as this. really hated the pseudo-feminist lilt here too (that thematically made no sense with the rest of the story, particularly once you're keyed into what's going on) but i've noticed most YA tends to go that route so
