Magic for Liars
by Sarah Gailey
My book club picked Magic for Liars to be our next read and I had never even heard of it before! I was kinda shocked because it seems like a book that could be really popular. I mean the plot revolves around a murder at a prestigous magic boarding school…
I ended up really enjoying Magic for Liars, at first it was kind of slow but once I reached the halfway mark I was able to finish it fairly quickly. Sarah Gailey did an amazing job characterizing Ivy. A large part of the book is focused on her struggles with herself, jealousy of her sister’s magic, and the lies she tells herself to get by. She was a really dynamic character and she slowly changes through the course of the story in a subtle way. The murder and the case plays a big part in this story obviously and I had so many theories throughout the book, some of which were on the right track while others… not so much. I had fun trying to piece together the who-done-it with Ivy, but it wasn’t the best murder mystery I had ever read. The ending to this book was kind of fitting in a way. It felt like Ivy was balanced between two possible endings and it was up to the reader to decide which way she eventually tips. Overall, Magic for Liars was an easy read that had a unique premise and an interesting case! 3.5 stars
PS: If you enjoy the penumbra podcast you would really enjoy this book it reminded me of a Juno Steel story.
