Darius the Great Deserves Better
by Adib Khorram
the way i relate to darius' constant ums. and the way laleh was a complete star.
this book was not plot driven, but about the characters. after visiting his family, darius returns to school, this time with a soccer team, a boyfriend, and a father.
okay, one weird thing was the whole landon vs. chip thing. khorram introduced us to landon as like peak niceness and real boyfriend material and then was like he's all about sex. but on the other hand, chip (i never got past his name, sorry, please call him cyprian, it's much better than chip) attracted darius' attention better, even if he had no idea that trent was a complete jerk to darius? like, i get that chip and trent are related, but you'd have to be completely oblivious not to see that trent was downright rude to darius consistently?
besides that, though, i liked how darius found freinds in his soccer team as well as his family. i didn't understand the grandma relationship thing, because it never was resolved. it seemed as if his grandmas were distant and remained distant from him. laleh and her classmates was sad, to know that she would have to go through the same kind of racism that darius had suffered through. but sohrab was still an amazing character, even if he only popped up periodically. what happened to him in the end was sudden, but cool if there ends up being a third book.
even with all the weird boyfriend dilemma, the distant grandmothers, sohrab's absence, and laleh's treatment at school, one thing shone throughout the book. it was darius' constant kindness. no matter how hard he had it, darius always seems to try to make people feel better, even if that was at the risk of his own happiness. he was such a sweet character, and like the title suggests, he really does deserve better. and yes, while he might deserve better than landon (who i thought just needed a change in attitude), i certainly believe he deserves better than chip. besides chip, however, this book was a nice read even with the lack of plot!
