A Marked Man by Sandrine Gasq-Dion

A friend recommended this book to me so I was already excited to read it when one of the main characters returned home to Tucson, Arizona. Which just happens to be where I live! In all of my reading that has never happened before so I was jazzed. The fact that this is the first book in a series that mixes contemporary with paranormal intrigued the heck out of me. This was also my first experience with the author and her writing, and I don't think it will be the last.

Mateo is an assassin. He spent ten years as a sniper in the military and when he and his friends, Josh, Sam, and Troy, decided not to re-enlist, the government hired them and now they've formed what they laughingly call the Non-A-Team, but the government isn't hunting them, they hunt for it. Mateo owns two classic muscle cars, but no home. Mateo doesn't like feeling confined or stuck in one place and he really doesn't like being inside all the time. He was orphaned at five and spent the next thirteen years bouncing from one foster home to the next. He determined at an early age that he was never going to fall in love and let anyone have the power to hurt him. His next assignment is a Riley Flynn who owns an electronics company in Phoenix and makes guidance chips for the military. Looking over the paperwork on Riley, Mateo can't figure out what he's done that makes him a target, but no matter, Mateo will still do his job. Mateo is still wondering a week later when none of his information shows Riley into anything dirty.

Riley owns and runs Flynn Electronics. His mother died when he was a young boy and his father sent him off to boarding school. He's gay but not out. His father despises gays and Riley never made a lot of friends because he couldn't trust anyone. One morning when Riley steps out of his office, a guy pushes him out of the way and saves him from being shot. Then the guy drags him away, finds a car to hotwire and asks Riley why someone would put a hit on him. Wait. How does this guy know someone put a hit on him? Oh, they hired this guy to do it. Riley meet Mateo. *grins* Mateo takes him to a safe house that only Mateo and his boss, Derek, know about. When Mateo gets in touch with Derek it turns out there's been a major leak and no one is sure from what department. Derek is just sure that Riley needs to be protected at all costs. Somehow Riley ends up on babysitting detail, which is definitely not something he enjoys. In fact, he hates it.

As I'm sure you can imagine, Riley and Mateo fall in love. And, believe me when I say these guys are pretty yummy together. But, Riley is kidnapped right out from under Mateo before either of them can say it. The rest of the team is called in, a rescue mission is planned, and a lot of Afghani terrorists are killed. I enjoyed this book. It was almost like watching an action adventure film but with hot man on man love. It held my attention enough I'll definitely read the second book in the series.
