4.5/5. The further I got into The Poppy War, the more addicted I became to the story, Rin's character development, and the relationship dynamics between her and her friends. The people weren't kidding: this book is B-R-U-T-A-L! Those last 150 pages? Absolutely diabolical.

Taking inspiration from the real-world Second Sino-Japanese War, RF Kuang weaved quite a beginning to what I'm sure is an incredible historical fantasy trilogy. I've already ordered books 2 and 3, by the way. Even though this was obviously a debut novel as parts weren't as strong as she's become with each book she's released, it was still fantastic. I could feel Rin and the other characters' raw emotions brought out by the horrific violence they go through and witness. I physically cringed more times than I could count at the sheer level of brutality in some of these scenes. Yet, through all the horror, Kuang managed to create an awe-inspiring story of revenge that I'm desperate to continue.

In case you haven't heard it enough - be warned before starting this. It's not for the faint of heart!
