Cloak of Deception
by James Luceno
This book is effectively a prequel to The Phantom Menace, and has been classified by many to act as a Political Thriller, though I'm not certain it quite reaches that genre.
The book focuses largely around the Trade Federation, Chancellor Valorum, Palpatine, a terrorist organization and various Jedi like Qui Gon Jinn who are sent to stop the terrorist attacks.
To me, this book failed to capture my interest completely, and I only feel as if this 'prequel' cleared up one or two things that we didn't already know in the end. I thought it was fun to see some Jedi we hadn't seen before, and while I think a novel about the former Chancellor was a good idea, this book pales against another TPM prequel, that being Darth Plagueis.
This book wasn't entirely boring, but the terrorist organizations and the characters within it didn't interest me really, and I felt overall that this book took a lot of pages to tell a very small and condensed story.
2.5 stars
