The Fire Sermon
by Francesca Haig
This book is touted as Hunger Games meets The Road. While there is a post apocalyptic world and lots of travel it is neither of these things. The concept is interesting. A world where a huge disaster happened that is still affecting the society. One twin is perfect (Alpha) and one twin is deformed (Omega). The world building is solid and I can see why it was picked up by Dreamworks for a future movie.
However, the story fell flat for me as a reader. In the beginning I was intrigued by the characters and the potential plot twist. Two Omega's trying to escape persecution by the Alpha rulers. Then they escape and it all goes downhill. They are always traveling. There is lots of dialog that becomes repetitive quickly and they never really achieve anything.
The other issue was the characters. Cass is very vanilla when she could have been so much more. She has seer powers! She has a crazy twin that is trying to capture her. She has a chance to change things. But, she ends up just plodding along with her rescued love interest Kip which was rather development. All of sudden they are kissing?! It really comes out of nowhere.
My final verdict is that it's okay, just okay. The plot is predictable and the the story is a bit slow. However, the world building is great and die hard sci-fi fans will likely enjoy it. I will most likely pick up the next book because I want to know what happens.
