Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge

challenging emotional informative reflective medium-paced

4.0

This was the book that inspired me to start reading again, and I really enjoyed Eddo-Lodge's prose and writing style in this short, but highly informative read. I bought this in the height of the BLM protests of 2020, and found it to be an excellent starting point for my future reads around race and how many other divisions in our society, such as class, misogyny, finance, political institutions etc. impact race.

It is the type of book that isn't too light that it only grazes the surface of these subjects, but not too heavy - making the content completely digestible. I found that it was a great starting point for me, for someone who until I read this, had never really had to think too much about my skin colour. It encouraged me to facilitate change and keep reading other fiction and non-fiction to broaden my understanding of the ways in which white supremacy infiltrates every morsel of the lives of people of colour.

There is a lot of emotion and feeling behind the writing but I think this only heightens the message that Eddo-Lodge wants to say. I enjoyed her writing style and it is such an important read for anyone to get to grips with the foundations of anti-racism education.
