I did not enjoy this book at all. I think the concept could be really insightful and emotional, but the execution wasn't successful for me. I didn't like any of the characters: Marion was insipid and vindictive and Tom had no personality. I didn't mind Patrick, but there wasn't enough/any real romance between him and Tom to make you root for them. Marion's situation, having a husband she loves but who could never love her in return, should be heartbreaking but I couldn't feel sympathetic towards her because she just appeared to be cruel. I think all the characters are supposed to be morally grey to communicate the pain and suffering the laws surrounding homosexuality caused, however in my opinion the characters weren't lovable enough to make up for their myriad flaws and provoke any sympathy. These characters made me feel miserable and misanthropic :(
