Little House on the Prairie
by Laura Ingalls Wilder
This series meant so much to me as a kid, I read this book over and over. It was so interesting to listen to it as an adult, realizing how many details I remembered. I was struck by how strong the writing is. It's also important as an adult to have a nuanced approach (and conversation with children) to how racism shows up in the book- both Ma and Pa have differing views on native people: fear, tolerance, ignorance, respect, etc- all show up. Laura is a child, she is trying to understand all of these things.
I was absolutely blown away with how perfect Cherry Jones was as a narrator. Absolutely incredible.
