“‘You can forever remember the wrongs done to you as long as you live,’ she said. ‘But if you forget ‘em and go on living, it’s almost as good as forgiving.’”

It’s a challenge to not feel agitated by a book with so many slurs, even if it’s supposed to paint a picture of a time and place. I loved the Good Lord Bird, but found this more challenging and painful to read — especially given the current political climate and spike in hatred, racism, xenophobia, etc.
