I would not usually pick up this sort of fandom-universe book, regardless of my feelings about source material (although I do love the Mass Effect games), but at this point I will read anything that N.K. Jemisin (co-)writes.
This went about as well as you would anticipate -- it doesn't reach her usual level of brilliance, but it's good fun, and better than I would usually expect this sort of novel to be. I might not bother re-reading it, unlike the rest of Jemisin's work (which I will inevitably turn back to time and time again), but it's a quick read, and certainly worth the time it took me to get through it.
