Fear Street #156

We get to hurtle back to Shadyside's past. Yet again. It's not a complete waste of time as whoever actually wrote this spent some time Googling 1920s slang and peppered it throughout.

Ruth-Ann Fear is jealous of her sister Rebecca's easy popularity and upcoming marriage. She takes some solace in the fact she has a boyfriend now, but things between Ruth-Ann and Peter could be better. We come to the wedding day and it's a tragedy!

It's the present day and another Fear wedding approaches. The bride, Marissa Fear, has insisted that the wedding be in Colorado at the same lodge and scenic mesa where a tragic wedding had occurred back in 1924. Marissa has a jealous younger sister, too, named Harmony who is this time joined, sort've, by twin brother Robby. When it appears that history may repeat itself can plucky young Harmony Fear save her sister's life with the help of her family's spellbook?

There were many, many Fears in this one with absolutely no reference to Simon or Angelica. The Goode/Fear family feud/curse is referenced at length, however, so that's something. I would have liked a little more clarity on who they are, exactly, but we're lucky the cursed family of Shadyside is even given the correct name.

Stine, or whichever ghost-writer wrote this, tries something different with 'You May Now Kill The Bride'. Even though it fails I'm giving the book a lot of credit for trying to adjust to the times. The 'Return to Fear Street' books are the last new books written, so far, in the franchise. The movies have been delayed so often I think publishers got tired of green-lighting ill-selling product without any other media to tie in to them. If the movies coming out this summer do well we can expect more. I did like the faux-vintage covers, but I have to ask: why not use the original Fear Street logo? That would be much more recognizable and the designers wouldn't have to use a template with so many fake creases.
