A surprisingly pleasant read given its reputation. I got invested in characters and arcs despite it reading more like a history book than a narrative. Reads a bit like Dune, or Fire & Blood (GoT). I recommend not worrying about dates and names unless you’re really trying to learn the Silmarillion and Tolkien lore; there’s enough context to get the gist of the events.
