lulaabees 's review for:
Light from Uncommon Stars
by Ryka Aoki
i was excited for this one but it was a huge disappointment, for two reasons:
- heavy-handed: the least subtle trans "suffering to acceptance" story you can possibly imagine and the least subtle immigrant metaphor you can possibly imagine, played to the fullest extent
speaking only on the trans part since i am: there's *nothing wrong* with hammering this in the way this has been but i'm... really not looking to read this sort of level 101 trans narrative
- the morality in this book is not holding up at all and it's horrifying. the implication that the six kids who had their soul stolen somehow deserved it as opposed to katrina (because they were... what, ruthless and determined to achieve success from the beginning, even at the cost of great personal sacrifice? because they weren't endearing enough for you??) or that it's something to be overlooked because um music is so cool! or that an adequate resolution to an angry and grieving teenager murdering two human beings is putting him in a time out corner (space isolation bubble) for fifty years is, like... what? jesus christ man
