Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
4.0

This was such a strange yet interesting book. Beneath the absurdity of it all, there are so many truths and lessons to be garnered from its pages.

The book is essentially about a young black man who moves to New York City for a job after getting kicked out of a school he attended down south. Naive to believe that all skin folk are kin folk, the unnamed protagonist soon learns that very few people (whether white or black) can be trusted and your own “brother” can be used against you.

I read the first third of the book confused, wondering what sort of story the author was trying to tell. But as we follow the main character, more events occur and a story about race and politics begins to unfold. Half way in, I was glued and I couldn’t wait to see how the story ended. Overall, it’s an absolutely ridiculous story full of humor yet wisdom.
