Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson

3.0

Jesse Aarons is excited for the start of school, where he will have his chance to win the traditional foot races that happens between the upper elementary boys...and therefore finally impress his father. But the new girl, Leslie Burke, wins the race and "ruins" it for the boys. Despite their rocky start, Jesse and Leslie become the best of friends. Together, they create the imaginary land of Terabithia, which they visit almost every day. But in early spring, after torrential rain, Jesse doesn't want to visit Terabithia; and the perfect excuse arrives: Miss Edmunds (the music teacher that he has a crush on) invites him to a special trip to the museum. He returns after a perfect day to find out that Leslie drowned in the river on the way to Terabithia. Jesse must navigate the grief he is feeling: from denial to anger to acceptance.

While it's a beautiful story about true friendship (and how it can affect someone) and the loss of a friend and how children might move on...it's definitely a product of it's time.
